Cary Nerelli

US History (New)

Cary received his BS in Social Sciences with a concentration in History and his MA in Instruction and Curriculum Design from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He taught at the secondary level from 1970 until his retirement from full time teaching in 2010. A member of the Social Sciences Department at Morro Bay High School from 1976 until 2013, Cary has taught a full range of Social Studies classes during his career but US History remains a lifetime love! In 1983 Cary initiated the APUS History curriculum and continued to tweak and develop the course until leaving MBHS to take on a new challenge teaching US History and coaching the women’s basketball team at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Cary has been a Consultant for the College Board for over twenty years, presenting one-day and week-long workshops and serving as a Table Leader reading the rigorous APUS History exams in Louisville, Kentucky.

In addition to his work with Advanced Placement, Cary worked as a reader for the California Golden State exam in US History and for the Praxis Social Studies series. Cary’s teaching and exam reading experience, along with his extensive travel throughout the United States, provide a strong foundation which enables him to bring both breadth and depth to the week-long summer institute in US History. Chosen by the students/faculty to be the Morro Bay High School “Teacher of the Year” for the 2001-2002 and again in 2002-2003, Cary was selected as the Teacher of the Year for the San Luis Coastal School District for 2002-2003.

What Participants Say…

Cary was amazing! The writing suggestions were by far the best thing at this workshop. Everything under the “Odds & Ends: heading in the binder was what I was looking for.

Cary really helped ease my fears of teaching AP! His resources, sense of humor, and genuine care for our needs was awesome and appreciated.

Very fast moving day full of relevant content and enjoyable discussions. I will be back for another course.

Awesome breakdown of DBQ and methodology on how to best prepare for writing on the AP exam.

Outstanding, practical and useful; patient with new students; anxiety eliminated, now confident; superb teacher, I learned so much.

Nice job, Cary. Love your enthusiasm and humor…deep knowledge of US History and confidence in your skills…
