French Language and Literature


GOALS AND OBJECTIVES


1. To provide the participants with ideas and techniques (vertical team concept) that will enhance the enrollment of students in the French program leading to the AP*.

2. To familiarize participants with the content and the different components of the AP* Language and Literature examination.

3. To share materials and techniques that will assist the participants and will help their students to succeed in their AP* test.

4. To present samples of AP* examinations and the grading system for each part, including all recent changes in the test format and its grading.

5. To provide the participants with time and opportunity for collegial interaction and exchange of successful strategies.


COURSE OUTLINE


Day 1

1. Methods for improving enrollment in French courses
2. General overview of the French curriculum leading to the AP* level
3. Course outline and the pace of work for the AP* test
4. Components of the AP* test
5. Major textbooks, workbooks, and supplementary materials


Day 2

I. Listening and Writing Preparation

   1. Tapes, videotapes
   2. Idiomatic expressions, essays, paragraphs, worksheets
   3. Test samples

II. Reading Preparation

   1. Excerpts from authentic material
   2. Poems and Fables
   3. Techniques for simplifying complex readings
   4. Test samples with multiple choice questions


Day 3

Speaking Preparation

1. Transparencies--sample tests
2. Role playing--useful expressions
3. An entire AP* test for participants


Day 4

Review of the AP* Language Examination

1. The grading system and rubrics of the AP* test; participants will experience grading the speaking and essay sections of the test.
2. Participant interaction and sharing of techniques


Day 5

Review of the AP* Literature Examination

1. The grading system and rubrics of the AP* test; participants will experience grading the free response questions and essay sections of the test.
2. Participant interaction and sharing of techniques
