Pre AP* English Vertical Teams

Lisa Walker is a staff member at the University of California at Berkeley. Over her teaching career she has taught reading and composition courses for students at the university, high school and middle school levels. She has also designed literacy-based curriculum for an elementary after school program in East Oakland and for skill building academies for middle school students across the Bay Area. Ms. Walker has been a College Board presenter for AP* English Vertical Teams and Pre-AP* Interdisciplinary Strategies in Social Science and English since 1998. She has worked with teams of educators across several states to implement curricular changes in English departments and to develop practical plans to encourage greater participation of underrepresented students in honors and advanced placement classes. Ms. Walker was recently selected as a College Board National Leader and has presented on the topics of "Creating Successful English Vertical Teams" and "Increasing Academic Rigor" at regional AVID conferences, as well as College Board's "Dream Deferred: The Future of African American Education."

For the past six years, she has also taught Pre-AP* Institutes. Her weeklong sessions are active, creative spaces where participants are involved in learning, critiquing, and adapting new strategies for the classroom. She has been successful in creating workshops that generate comments like this one from a participant, "She made the class feel relaxed and comfortable. This enabled us to freely share ideas. Lisa Walker was also very knowledgeable about the subject matter and its real life application."
