Jim Poirier
AP Chemistry

Jim has taught chemistry at La Jolla High School for 25 years where he started the AP* Chemistry program in 1985.  He graduated from UCSD in chemistry and was a member of the first class at UCSD’s Revelle College.  Jim also holds a Master’s degree from San Diego State University.  He is a Reader for the College Board and authored the most recent “Curriculum Guide for Teaching AP* Chemistry.”  Demonstrations play a big role in Jim’s teaching and he particularly likes to use pumpkins and fireworks in his demonstrations.

Jim is an avid ocean swimmer and can often be found at the Cove swimming out to the buoys with a group of friends.  His group leaves the Cove at 6:15 a.m. every other day all year round.

Please join him for a swim if you are in town!

He has been married to wife, Vanda, for 30 years and has two sons, Marcelo and Jon.
